Yes, you can categorize your news and events and manage the categories from the admin panel.

b) Does this extension only provide provision to add text content?

News & Events Module not only provides functionality to add text content but also allows to upload the banner for every news or event added.

c) Can I choose where to show the news within my website?

By default, this extension provides settings into the admin panel for displaying the news and events block in particular section of your website. It also provides with the settings to display the social sharing buttons like google, twitter, etc.
